19 September 2013

No time for blogging, no time for working out, no time to do basic things like fold my laundry.

So instead I’m going to share with you quickly some of my favorite things to cook! And some of them are serious timesavers.

Happy Monday

08 July 2013

I hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend.  Mine had some good and some bad.

First the bad news: one of my chickens died. We think it was the heat, but just aren’t sure.  I’m sad but my father in law says this is just a part of being a farmer:(

On a brighter note regarding the chickens, we were able to get the new chicken coop we built hauled over to our house and all set up.  Our chickens are now living the life! We even planted some lilies around their new house.

What else…oh yes, I started injections which I briefly mentioned yesterday morning.  It’s going fine, day 3 and I already feel like a pro at stabbing myself with the needles.  I’ve only got one bruise, so I’m hoping that means my bruising will be kept to a minimum.  It’s helpful that I’m quite tan right now so bruises wouldn’t be that easy to see.  As for side effects I have had a bit of a headache, but I get them all the time so when I read on the paperwork a headache could be a result of the meds I knew I was destined to  have a continual headache for a bit.  It’s worth it though!

But life doesn’t stop because you want to  have a baby! Thursday and part of Friday I spent some time at the pool. Here is Mabel after she stole my chair! Go get a drink of water and I return to find this little cutie sharing my towel.

Yesterday we hit the water and went for a canoe ride. Somehow we were able to finish it in about 3.5 hours so once we were home Ben and I were able to get some flowers planted.  Still lots we want to do, but we'll  get there eventually.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend.  I leave you with a photo of my husband’s latest obsession: the root beer float!

Boy was I a sight to see

07 June 2013

If it wasn’t so early in the morning I’m sure my sister would have been up and snapping photos of the shit show going on in my backyard 5 minutes before I needed to leave the house.

Tropical Storm Andrea. Have you heard of her?  We’ll she’s wreaking havoc on my backyard i.e. making it nasty sopping wet, and my mother in law sent my husband home from the farm to help me move the chicken coop.

Yeah, I know.

Ben called me to say it had to get done, I said can’t happen I’m running out the door for a meeting.  Well I lost that battle, because the chickens were my idea.

So we pick up the cage to move it under the deck.  All the chickens escape except the rooster who sat perched on his roosting bar in the only dry area of the coop.  Ben and I run around the back yard trying to gather the escapees while getting down poured on.  I was wearing Bens huge fly fishing boots so my pants didn’t get dirty and the chickens were waddling away from us in circles.  We get them into the basement (where the heck else would we put them?) and move the coop up under the deck.  Go into the basement and gather 3 of the 4 hens to put in the coop and lose the other in all of my little sisters storage.  So we’re moving mattresses to try and find the escape artist.

I was drenched, late to my meeting, and every time I look at myself in the mirror I’m reminded that those damn chickens are the reason I’m having such a bad hair day.

And those poor chickens…they must be frightened by all the moving they’ve had to endure this week.

The chickens have arrived!!

Names to come soon…..

I want my chicken coop!

05 June 2013

My mind this week is completely consumed by these chickens!!!

My mother in law brought 4 hens and 1 rooster to our house last night but then took them home with her since I don’t have our coop set up yet:(  Our coop arrives tonight so hopefully I can put it together quickly and then get the chickens back to our house.

But I can’t stop thinking about them.  I want them home and the coop up, it’s just all so exciting:)

That happened quickly!

03 June 2013

This weekend brought about an interesting new development, we’ll two actually.

My in-laws got a cow.  This is Buttercup
Photo: Meet Buttercup!

About a year ago (so not really that quickly) I told my mother in law that if they got a milk cow I would get chickens and we could be well on our way to not needing these things from the grocery store and worrying that they were packed with hormones and such.  We already get our beef from a local farmer and so this would just be another step in the right direction.

And then Buttercup came and my mother in law told me that I have 5 speckled hens coming to my house on Tuesday, er tomorrow.  So it’s actually all happening.  Honestly I don’t think I can have chickens in my backyard, but I’m going to roll with it until someone says something or I get in trouble.  I am on over an acre, and not in a neighborhood so it really shouldn’t be an issue.  And there are two horse farms on my street.

So I bought chicken feed over the weekend and have been racking my brain as to how I’m going to house these chicks!  And then today I found a chicken coop online that wasn’t outrageously priced and hit proceed and hopefully by the weekend I’ll also have a chicken coop!  until then the little girls can sleep in a big dog cage.

Here is their new house…

Wish us luck!  My husband is NOT on board at all and he says this whole thing is my deal so I’m going to have to be responsible…I can do it:)
